Why this training

Career-focused

Certificate and portfolio-ready mini-projects that employers value.

Hands-on

Step-by-step modelling with AERMET/AERMOD/AERMAP and troubleshooting exercises.

Flexible & global

Attend the full pathway or pick modules. Standard live window: 12:00–14:00 UTC.

What you’ll get

  • 8 modules × 2 hours (16 hours total)
  • Real datasets, practical assignments
  • Certificate (full programme or per-module)
  • Discussion space & weekly office hours
  • 30-day replay access

Certification

Complete all eight modules to earn the Certificate in AERMOD Air Dispersion Modelling. Single-session attendees receive a Certificate of Completion for that topic.

  • Shareable PDF certificate and LinkedIn badge
  • Access to global cohort and alumni space
  • Certificate issued on successful completion of assignments

Programme modules (8 × 2 hours)

Module 1 — Foundations of air dispersion

Core concepts in air dispersion: atmospheric boundary layer, stability classes, transport and diffusion processes. Terminology, regulatory context, and the role of AERMOD in impact assessment.

Module 2 — Meteorological data processing (AERMET)

Preparing surface and upper-air data: formatting, checks, quality control, and generating AERMET outputs. Understanding how meteorology drives dispersion results.

Module 3 — Terrain & mapping (AERMAP)

Using digital elevation data. Domain definition, receptor grids, hill-height scales, and preparing AERMAP outputs for model runs.

Module 4 — Source characterisation

Defining emission sources: point, line, area, and volume. Stack parameters, release conditions, building downwash factors, and temporal/seasonal emission profiles.

Module 5 — Model setup & data input (AERMOD & BPIP)

Building control files: units, options, receptors, emissions, and boundary conditions. BPIP processing for downwash. Common mistakes in input preparation.

Module 6 — Running AERMOD & interpreting outputs

Running the model with different options. Understanding output tables, plotting concentrations, diagnosing errors, and validating results.

Module 7 — Advanced applications & good practice

Sensitivity testing, uncertainty, and special modules. Good practice guidelines for regulatory and non-regulatory studies.

Module 8 — Case studies & wrap-up

Guided case studies covering industrial, traffic, and complex terrain scenarios. For the full certificate pathway, participants will complete a hands-on demo project — an end-to-end AERMOD study from input preparation through to results — to consolidate skills and demonstrate competence.

Complete all modules to earn the Certificate in AERMOD Air Dispersion Modelling, or enrol selectively on individual modules.

Frequently asked questions

What if I can’t attend live?

All sessions are recorded. Registered participants get 30 days’ replay access plus a weekly Q&A recap recording.

Do I need prior AERMOD experience?

No. The programme starts from fundamentals and progresses to advanced workflows. Prior experience is helpful but not required.

What does the certificate require?

The full certificate requires completion of all 8 modules and successful delivery of the end-to-end demo project (the practical mini-study). Module-only attendees receive individual module completion certificates.

What is the demo project?

A guided, hands-on AERMOD study using supplied datasets (met, terrain, emissions). You prepare inputs, run AERMOD, interpret outputs and submit results or present them. It’s a practical capstone used to demonstrate competence.

How is the demo project assessed?

Assessment is pass/fail based on correct input preparation, reasonable model setup, plausible results interpretation and a short report or presentation. Feedback is provided. Re-submission is allowed once if required.

Will I get software access?

Yes. Trainees receive 30-day access to AERMOD Cloud® (training licence) plus sample meteorological and terrain datasets. No commercial licence purchase is needed for the course.

What are the technical requirements?

Stable internet, a Windows PC or a VM capable of running the cloud tools, and basic spreadsheet skills. We supply step-by-step exercise files—no high-performance hardware required.

How much time will I need outside sessions?

Expect 1–3 hours of practical work between modules for exercises. The demo project typically requires an additional 6–12 hours depending on depth and prior experience.

Is this course recognised for CPD?

This course is not formally accredited by a professional body, but it qualifies as structured learning. We provide a CPD statement and hours for each module and the full pathway, which you can usually submit as part of your self-declared CPD. Please check your professional body’s rules on CPD acceptance.

What support is available after the course?

Graduates get 30 days’ post-course email support for questions on their project. Extended mentoring or consultancy is available at an additional fee.

Are recordings and materials downloadable?

Training slides, datasets and exercise files are downloadable. Recordings are available for 30 days for replay only (not for permanent download).

What about refunds and cancellations?

Standard policy: full refund if you cancel at least 14 days before the cohort start; 50% refund within 7–14 days; no refund within 7 days. Substitutions are allowed at any time. Check the booking page for full terms.

Do you offer group or corporate bookings?

Yes. We provide group discounts, private cohorts and customised training. Contact our sales team for quotes and scheduling.

How do you handle personal data and project data?

We follow GDPR-compliant practices for registration and course administration. During live training sessions, participants may choose to share project data or examples, which can be visible to other attendees. Shared material remains the responsibility of the participant. Datasets submitted for the demo project are used only for training and assessment purposes and are not distributed further. Please review our privacy policy for full details.

Which timezones do cohorts run in?

Live cohorts run at times designed to suit multiple regions; specific start times are shown on the booking page. We recommend checking session times in your local timezone before enrolling.
